How Often Do I Have To See the Doctor for Medical Marijuana in Florida?

The longest time frame in Florida for a medical marijuana certification is 210 days, or 7 months. The certifying doctor may enter a shorter certification in the registry requiring you to visit with the doctor more often. Certified Marijuana Doctors clinic certifies patients for the longest time allowed by Florida law, which is 7 months. 

How Long After I See the Doctor Does it Take Before I can Purchase at a Dispensary in Florida?

Our doctors enter your information into the medical marijuana registry during your visit. In Florida you also need orders giving you permission to buy specific products. The doctor will review the intake methods you'll have access to.  Those orders are entered into the marijuana registry immediately after your visit so you can go directly to any dispensary to purchase. How do I get a medical marijuana card in Florida?

The first step is to visit with a medical marijuana doctor. Florida law requires an in person visit with a certified medical marijuana doctor to establish a relationship. After the first visit a patient may qualify for a phone or telehealth visit. If the doctor determines the patient qualifies for medical marijuana the patient will be entered into the state of Florida medical marijuana registry. 

How Often Does a Florida Medical Marijuana Card have to be Renewed?

A Florida medical marijuana card expires in 12 months.  The doctor certification allows you to purchase for a maximum of 210 days (7 months).  Often patients get confused thinking they can still purchase because their card has not expired. However, to purchase marijuana in Florida you need

1. An active certification.  (expires in a maximum of 7 months, however can be sooner) Renewed by your medical marijuana doctor.

2. Active Orders  (expires in a maximum of 7 months, however can be sooner) Renewed by your medical marijuana doctor.

3. A valid medical marijuana card. (expires in 12 months)  Renewed by the State of Florida Department of Health Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU)

The "Office of Medical Marijuana Use" is a Department in the Florida Department of Health. 

Is there a limit to how much marijuana flower I can purchase in a Florida Dispensary?

Florida law limits the purchase of marijuana flower to 2.5 ounces of flower every 35 days. A doctor can submit a "Request for Exception" or (RFE) on behalf of a medical marijuana patient. The OMMU must approve the request. Often medical records have to be submitted to the OMMU to get an RFE approved. 

What is the Difference Between Marijuana Purchased from a Dispensary and Marijuana Purchased from the Street

Florida has strict guidelines requiring the marijuana sold in state licensed medical marijuana dispensaries to be tested for mold, mildew, pesticides and other contaminants. There is a list of chemicals that are banned and can not be used by Florida Dispensaries growing marijuana. Each dispensary is required to grow their own supply of marijuana.

The THC content varies from strain to strain and has a wide range in the various products that are available. The THC content is not limited.  

Does a Florida Medical Marijuana Card Keep me from Getting Arrested?

Your Florida Medical Card offers protection for carrying marijuana from place to place.  However, there is no public consumption allowed. There is no consumption allowed without permission at a workplace or school.  Concentrated forms of marijuana such as vape pens carry serious penalties and criminal charges. You must keep the marijuana in its original dispensary packaging. 

Can I Operate a Motor Vehicle While Smoking Marijuana?

You can not smoke marijuana and drive. It is against the law to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of any intoxicating substance, including marijuana. 

 

Can I Smoke Marijuana in a Park?

There is no public consumption of marijuana allowed in Florida.

Can Employers Discriminate and Not Hire Me Based on Having a Medical Marijuana Card?

Employers are quickly changing with the times. Many employers have dropped marijuana from their pre-employment drug screening. This change seems to have taken place after employers became aware of how many quality applicants they were missing out on.  However, there are no legal protections for employees since marijuana is still illegal at the federal level. The vast majority of patients at Certified Marijuana Doctors are either retired, or use marijuana after their working hours. 

Since Marijuana is Medical can I Use Marijuana While at Work?

You must have the permission of your employer to consume marijuana at work. The majority of employers do not allow consumption while working. However in rare instances some employers accommodate employees, however they are not required to do so. 

Do Florida Dispensaries Sell CBD?

Florida dispensaries refer to CBD as "LOW THC" products. These products are preferred by patients who do not want to get "high".  CBD dispensary products in Florida do contain THC, however the THC is counteracted by CBD.

Is There a Limit on the Amount of THC a Florida Marijuana patient Can Purchase?

 In Florida there is a combined limit of 24,500 mg of THC for all routes other than "smokeable," in a 70 day period.  These routes include things such as vape, concentrates, pills, suppositories, topical cream, patches, sublingual drops etc.  The smokeable limit is 2.5 ounces every 35 days. 

Do I Get My Medical Marijuana the Same Day?

You can purchase at a dispensary once a marijuana doctor enters your certification into the OMKMU registry and enters orders into your registry profile. Some offices take longer than others. Certified Marijuana Doctors certifies all patients, and enters all orders the same day, allowing patients to purchase the same day, before your card arrives in the mail. The dispensary will use your driver's license to verify your identity in the OMMU registry.  Seasonal residents are also certified the same day they visit the doctor at Certified Marijuana Doctors, and will also have their orders entered the same day, however the state will take a little longer to verify your identity and approve you to make purchases. 

Is Recreational Marijuana Available in Florida?

No. Not at this time.  In November of 2024 the proposed amendment 3 which attempted to allow recreational marijuana in Florida failed to pass. A vast number of Florida residents, patients and dispensary workers voted against the amendment since it failed to include a provision for residents to grow their own marijuana. There was also a big segment of voters who are concerned with the roll out in other states where the quality of medical marijuana suffered once recreational passed.  High sales tax rates was another concern since there is no sales tax on medical marijuana. Many citizens were also concerned with the widespread public use in recreational states where the smell commonly lingers in public parks, sidewalks, ski resorts, etc. The amendment was primarily funded by Trulieve to the tune of close to approximately $155 million dollars. This was labeled by many as corporate greed in weed.

What if I don't smoke? Are edibles or other intake methods available in Florida?

There are various intake methods available in Florida. Smoking the dried flower is the most popular followed by vaping which is also inhaled, however is more discreet since the smell does not linger as it does when you smoke marijuana.  Vaping consists of concentrated extract that is loaded into a cartridge which is loaded into a vape pen and heated.  There are also edibles such as gummies available. Sublingual drops, capsules, topical patches, RSO oil, topical creams, and suppositories.
